Description

Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) provides a buffering system to maintain the physiological pH range and osmotic balance of the culture media. HBSS provides cells with a source of water and essential inorganic ions, and carbohydrate as an energy source.

Applications

HBSS without calcium and magnesium can also be useful for diluting cells for counting. While HBSS with calcium and magnesium is useful for transporting cells or tissue samples, preparing reagents, suspension cultures, as well as reducing clumping when clumping is a problem.

Formulations with calcium and magnesium support cell adhesion and are generally used as transport media, or for reagent preparation. Formulations without calcium and magnesium are required for rinsing chelators from the culture before cell dissociation.
